SYDNEY AND LAUREN-KATE HAVE WRITTEN SEQUELS
Most of us talk about writing a book but never seem to get around to it. Not the case for Sydney Campanella, daughter of Ann and Joel Campanella of Black Farm Road, and Lauren-Kate Stewart, daughter of Karen and Bruce Stewart of Runnymede. (LINK to AD 2013/01/17) These young ladies are just 12 years old and sixth grade home schoolers. At age eleven they published their first novels and now at 12, each has a sequel on the market. (Actually Lauren-Kate will not be 12 until later this month.)
Sydney’s first book is called “The Mysterious Birthday Gift” and her sequel is “Mystery on the Trail.” For Lauren-Kate, fantasy is featured in “Commander You You and the Imperial Diamond” as well as its sequel, “Commander You You and the Time Penny.” These books are published by The Bridge in Huntersville and are available at Main Street Books in Davidson and on line at Amazon.com. The girls will be at Main Street Books this Friday from 6-9pm as part of Christmas in Davidson to talk about their books and have signed copies for sale at $10 each.
Best friends since they met in a sewing class in early 2011, Sydney and Lauren-Kate love the outdoors, enjoy their pets, take piano lessons and will be appearing in the Masterworks production of “It’s a Wonderful Life” in Mooresville on December 14. To know more about these talented young writers, check out their author bios on Goodreads.com.

The Write Stuff
While lots of scribes talk about how they're going to write a book one day, friends Sydney Campanella and Lauren-Kate Stewart have actually done it-twice-and they're not even teenagers yet. At 10, both girls wrote and published full-length novels. Sydney's book, They Mysterious Birthday Gift, is about 150 pages, and Lauren-Kate's book, Commander You You and the Imperial Diamond, is a fantasy of similar length. The girls' books were published by The Bridge, a small, independent press, and they're available at Main Street Books in Davidson as well as on Amazon, where they've both received favorable reviews. Not ones to rest on their laurels, the friends, who are both homeschooled, didn't waste time crafting new books. Campanella, now 11, published Mystery on the Trail this summer, and Lauren-Kate is scheduled to publish her sequel, Commander You You and the Time Penny, in October. Campanella's and Stewart's books are available for sale on Amazon and at Main Street Books in Davidson. - SB

SYDNEY’S SECOND NOVEL
Literary world, take notice! Eleven year old Sydney Campanella, daughter of Ann and Joel Campanella, has just published her second novel. Called “Mystery on the Trail,” the sequel to last summer’s, “The Mysterious Birthday Gift,” continues the adventures of an engaging sister and brother team who tackle another mystery with their rambunctious dog, Rusty. As Sydney’s good friend and writing mentor, Lisa Williams Kline, comments, “Campanella, at the tender age of 11, knows how to create appealing characters, keep action moving and craft cliffhangers. Once you start reading, you won’t be able to stop.”
Hot off Huntersville’s “The Bridge” press, Sydney received the first 50 copies of her new mystery novel just a week ago on July 18. It is available now at Main Street Books in Davidson and on Amazon.com as well. Since the book’s action takes place on the Appalachian Trail, Sydney had to do appropriate research about the trail and its path along the North Carolina/Tennessee border – no problem for this home school young lady since she loves the outdoors. (The family is planning a dude ranch vacation later this summer in Colorado!) Sydney’s favorite subjects are writing and science but she manages to find time for piano lessons and taking care of her pets. Once she has an idea for a book, she outlines the story and types it on her laptop. Is she already thinking about a third mystery? You bet – with a setting at an overnight camp perhaps.
Sydney’s best friend and fellow author, Lauren-Kate Stewart, daughter of Karen and Bruce Stewart, published her first novel last year at the same time as Sydney (AD Jan 17, 2013). Just a heads-up to our readers to be on the lookout for Lauren-Kate’s second novel which is due for publication later this year. We will keep you posted.

Writers of all ages share their work
Charlotte Writers' Club-North sponsored a multi-generational panel of writers Jan. 13 at The Warehouse in Cornelius. The authors read a sample of their work and moderator Lynn Dausman and the audience posed questions to the panel. Picture from left to right: Tom Perkins, poet and memoir writer; Lauren-Kate Stewart, author of the recently published fantasy, "Commander You You and the Imperial Diamond;" Lisa Williams Kline, author of the popular middle-school series "Sisters in All Seasons;" Sydney Campanella, author of "The Mysterious Birthday gift," and Mark Kenna, a student at Appalachian State University and poetry editor of the school's literary magazine, "The Peel."

Up Close with Sydney Campanella and Lauren-Kate Stewart
Sydney, who just turned eleven last September, is the daughter of Ann and Joel Campanella. Lauren-Kate is the daughter of Karen and Bruce Stewart. These home-schooled young ladies met in a sewing class in the spring of 2011 and now are best friends. One of their home assignments as ten-year-olds involved a class called “Learning to Write the Novel Way,” a curriculum for students in grades 5-12. Although technically only fourth graders at the time, they met once a week discussing characters and plots of early “chapters” that might eventually become novels. Sydney was able to type hers on the computer but Lauren-Kate found it easier to dictate to her mother at the computer.
Yes, they got frustrated. They got “writer’s block.” They got discouraged. But they persevered and finished the final editing of their “novels” last June. In July they had the published volumes in hand. Sydney’s novel is a 162 page mystery, called “The Mysterious Birthday Gift.” Lauren-Kate turned to a fantasy taking readers through an imaginary world in her 132 page book called “Commander You You and the Imperial Diamond.” The girls each created their own cover art with help from their art teacher, Joanna Rissanen. Sydney’s mom, with a background in news and magazine editing, helped with the publishing and Lauren-Kate’s mom has guided the marketing. Their books are available at Main Street Books in Davidson and also online at Amazon.com.
How exciting it was for these new authors to sell their books at Christmas in Davidson and at an area craft fair last month with sales running over 100 books. They are at ease speaking in public as shown last Sunday at the literary event. At that gathering, Sydney and Lauren-Kate each read from their novels and easily fielded questions about their writing process and future plans. What’s next for these young ladies? Why, sequels, of course, and they are already hard at work writing them. But we should mention that they both take piano lessons, love animals and being outdoors. Sydney’s favorite subjects are science and writing. Lauren-Kate loves history. We wish these well-rounded, very talented young ladies the very best and look forward to hearing much more about their literary successes.
